A whiplash injury occurs after an instant, rapid acceleration-deceleration force to the head, neck and or spine. When the neck forcefully moves forward and then backwards (or vice versa) a whiplash can occur. This commonly occurs as a result of a car accident, vigorous sport injury or a fall. One can present with several symptoms – depending on the extent of the injury. However common symptoms can include; headaches, neck pain and stiffness, dizziness and sometimes shoulder pain. Some may also experience nerve pain traveling down the arms and hands, jaw pain, anxiety and depression.
Whiplash is one of the most complex injuries one can have and is treated best by professionals. With that said, within the first couple of days of injury, using ice and anti-inflammatory medication is very beneficial. As your symptoms ease up, you can start applying moist heat to the area and start a gentle exercise program. Exercises should then be gradually increased over time, for instance; starting with range of motion exercises, isometrics, and neck stabilization – then progressing to upper back and shoulder joint strengthening.
Typically, those who have been involved in a motor vehicle accident would be taken to the hospital or family physician for an examination and diagnostic tests.

The recovery time for one to heal from a whiplash injury is dependent on various factors. For example, what muscles/tissues were injured, the extent of damage, and the task/occupation/sport you want to return to.
Generally speaking, soft tissue healing typically takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks. However it depends if the inflammation was managed correctly within the early stages of the injury.
In addition, this 6-8 week period does not include the time to build up motor control, stability, strength and endurance. That is why it is very important to seek medical attention from a healthcare provider immediately if you have such an injury.
