Sciatica Treatment Brampton

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a type of back pain that is caused by irritation with the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the human body and originates from nerve roots in the lower back and extends through your gluteal/buttocks region traveling down both legs.

How Does It Develop?

Sciatica can happen to anyone, at any time. However, it typically happens if:

  • You have muscle spasms/ any type of irritation or inflammation to the sciatic nerve
  • Previous injury to the sciatic nerve
  • Previous injury/tightness to the muscles that surround the sciatic neve
  • Previous/ current diagnosis of a herniated disc
  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease

What Are Symptoms of Sciatica?

  • Feeling of numbness that travelsbehind thethigh (and can also extend below the knee)
  • “Pins and needles” sensation in the legs, toes and or feet
  • Limited movement especially while bending, walking or twisting
  • Pain in the lower back or legs that worsens while sitting or standing for a period of time
  • Sudden shooting pain that travels from the lower back down to the legs (this can also occur with sudden movements)

How Is Sciatica Treated? How Long Will It Take to Recovery from Sciatica?

Both physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment has been shown to help those who have sciatica. It is difficult to dictate specific treatment that you will undergo as everyone’s body and healing process are different. However, the chiropractor and physiotherapist may work together depending on the findings of your assessment.

Typically, your treatment can consist of hands-on manual therapy and mobilization of your joints and muscles to relieve any pressure of the sciatic nerve. Acupuncture, dry needling and cupping may also be used. The chiropractor may also perform specific adjustments to your spine which can offload pressure on the sciatic nerve – decreasing the pain.

If you are experiencing sciatica symptoms or have a diagnosis of sciatica, book your appointment with our regulated Chiropractor or Physiotherapist at Active Life Wellness Center. We will be more than happy to be able to help you have a speedy and safe recovery.
