- Slowly pull your shoulders and head up into a straight sitting position
- Push your lower back forward for a few seconds, accentuating your spine’s natural curve
- Slightly release your sitting position
- Scoot your body back until your spine rests back of the chair, and let your hips sit at the bend of the chair
Other Ways to Improve Your Sitting Posture
While learning how to sit with good posture is an excellent place to start, you can further protect your spine and joints by taking a few extra precautions:
- Take regular breaks. Get up every hour to stretch and walk around for a few minutes. This practice helps break your sitting posture, relieving your muscles throughout the day.
- Invest in back support. Get an ergonomic desk chair or lumbar support pillow to keep your spine in check throughout the day.
- Set up a standing desk. If you can, alternate between sitting and standing while working to give your muscles, ligaments, and joints a break from pressure build-up.

- Keep your feet on the floor. Don’t cross your legs or elevate them. If you have to stretch to touch the floor, get a footrest.
