Do you catch yourself slouching when you sit down? If you’re like most people, the answer is probably yes. It’s easy to forget proper posture when trying to get through your day, but this can have serious health consequences.

Don’t let your slouching cause aches and pains — learn how to sit with good posture today!

Why is Proper Sitting Posture So Important?

In today’s modern, tech-focused world, the time we spend sitting, especially in front of computer screens, has increased exponentially — and we’re starting to pay the price. Prolonged sitting can cause headaches, back pain, and shoulder pain, as well as slow your metabolism and affect your body weight.

While you might not be able to quit your desk job for something that gets you moving, you can avoid these problems by learning how to sit properly. Aligning your spine helps reduce stress on your nerves, muscles, and joints.

How to Achieve a Good Sitting Posture: 6 Steps

It can be hard to remember to sit properly, but with practice and mindfulness, you’ll get there. Start with these steps, and you’ll be on your way to fixing poor posture:

  1. Sit at the near edge of your chair
  2. Fully slouch your neck and shoulders forward
  3. Slowly pull your shoulders and head up into a straight sitting position
  4. Push your lower back forward for a few seconds, accentuating your spine’s natural curve
  5. Slightly release your sitting position
  6. Scoot your body back until your spine rests back of the chair, and let your hips sit at the bend of the chair

Other Ways to Improve Your Sitting Posture

While learning how to sit with good posture is an excellent place to start, you can further protect your spine and joints by taking a few extra precautions:

  • Take regular breaks. Get up every hour to stretch and walk around for a few minutes. This practice helps break your sitting posture, relieving your muscles throughout the day.
  • Invest in back support. Get an ergonomic desk chair or lumbar support pillow to keep your spine in check throughout the day.
  • Set up a standing desk. If you can, alternate between sitting and standing while working to give your muscles, ligaments, and joints a break from pressure build-up.
  • Adjust your screen. Position your computer monitor or laptop screen at eye level to reduce neck pain and help you maintain a better posture.
  • Keep your feet on the floor. Don’t cross your legs or elevate them. If you have to stretch to touch the floor, get a footrest.
