If you’ve ever had a tingling feeling or shooting pain from your lower back down to your leg, you may be experiencing sciatica. Rest assured, there are common causes and treatment options for sciatica.

Continue reading to explore sciatica, its common causes, and how experienced chiropractors can help provide treatment for a healthy, pain-free life.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a back condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is inflamed or compressed. When this specific nerve is irritated, it causes a range of feelings like pain or tingling sensations.

Typically, that starts at the lower back and can shoot down the legs, generally stopping below the knee but can shoot to the bottom of the ankle. Since sciatica is a common ailment, you or someone you know will likely experience it at some point.

Common Causes of Sciatica

A wide range of things can irritate the sciatic nerve. Since everyone is different, it’s essential to note that sciatica develops in many ways.

1. Minor Injuries

The first cause of sciatica is a minor injury. Some of these injuries include falls, slips, or muscle trains. Sometimes, these falls can cause the center of gravity to shift, putting stress on the nerve or nearby nerves.

2. Repetitive Stress

Like other areas of the body can experience stress, a similar thing can happen with the sciatic nerve. Certain repetitive motions irritating the lower back nerves include raking, shovelling, or rowing.

3. Bulging Discs

Bulging or herniated discs are another common cause of sciatica nerve pain. A herniated or bulging disc happens when the cartilage discs between the vertebrae in your spine tear or bulge out of line.

These discs are supposed to provide cushion, but when they tear or bulge, they can compress nerves in the lower back, causing the core muscle in the back to overwork and put stress on the sciatic nerve.

4. Pregnancy

One of the risk factors for developing sciatica is pregnancy. As your body goes through changes, the enlarged uterus can shift your center, leading to a compression of the sciatic nerve.

5. Spinal Stenosis

A final common cause of sciatica is spinal stenosis. With stenosis, the spinal canal narrows. When this occurs, the spinal cord can compress, pinching the spinal nerves surrounding it. When the nerves pinch, it can lead to a tingly feeling down the legs.
